Carved out of Thurston County, it was originally named after William Rufus King, Vice-President when the Washington Territory was created, it was renamed after Martin Luther King by county council vote in 1986. However since only the State of Washington can charter counties, it was not made official until April 19, 2005. And the county logo was changed on March 12, 2007.

In the 2010 census, King County reported a population of just under 2 million residents. It is the 14th most populous county in the USA and ranked in the top 100 in per capita income. Seattle was named the county seat on January 11, 1853. Interestingly, King County extended to the Olympic Peninsula but when peninsular prohibitionists threatened to shut down Seattle drinking establishments, Doc Maynard engineered an independence movement and preserved its brothels and saloons.
