Originally named Titusville by the original western settlers in 1860 it became a booming farming center as a result of a blight affecting hops in England. Selling their mountainous harvest to breweries in Kent County England, the locals soon adopted the name Kent, to honor the source of their growing wealth. With 793 inhabitants, it was officially incorporated on May 28, 1890 and was the second city in King County.

The end of World War II saw Kent explode to 12 times its size as it became the home to many blossoming post war industries. Boeing, General Electric and Whirlpool called Kent home. The perenial flooding problems were abated when the Howard Hansen Dam was completed. This made Kent's wide flat plains an ideal industrial center. Kent soon became the main distribution hub of the Pacific Northwest with its dense concentration of warehouses. It is currently the second largest distribution center in the USA.
